Students - Taking Digital Assignments

Written by Neta Raz Studnitski

Access Digital Assignment

To access a digital assignment, click View lesson from your main assignment page or Start lesson from the lesson guide.

Header Screen

The digital assignment will open on the Header screen, where you can see general details about the lesson, including:

  • The class through which this lesson was assigned to you

  • The name of the assigning teacher

  • Whether this assignment is Student-Paced or Teacher-Paced

  • Total amount of questions in the assignment

  • Your current grade

As long as the assignment is Student-Paced and open, you can proceed to click the Start button when you are ready to begin.

If the assignment is closed, paused, or Teacher-Paced - you will not be able to begin until your teacher opens it up for you.

Teacher Paced mode

If your teacher assigned with a teacher paced mode, your teacher will control your progress in the assignment, and you will only be able to work on the page your teacher will be presenting at any given time. This means you will not be able to navigate forward or backward on your own - there will be no navigation buttons (start, next, back).

Student Paced mode

If your teacher assigned with a student paced mode, you will have control of your own progress. You will be able to navigate between sections of the assignment and move both forward and backward at your preference using the next/back buttons or a left side progress bar.

Respond to questions

We recommend reviewing this article that goes into detail about all the types of questions you may see on an assignment, and how to interact with them. Please refer to this article for guidance and technical instructions.

Mark questions for review

If you're not sure about your response to a question and would like to circle back to it later, you can mark it for later review and get a reminder to go back to it before you submit your work. Simply click on the Review button at the top right corner of the question:

Before you submit your work you will get a notification from our platform, reminding you to circle back and review the question(s) you previously marked. Click on 'Go Back' and our platform will re-direct you to the first question marked for review. if you changed your mind about reviewing the question and would like to proceed with submitting your work instead, click 'Submit Anyway':

Check your progress & score

Depending on the settings your teacher chose for the lesson, you may have the option to check your score as you are working on the assignment. This option to Check Answer will only be available if the question is automatically graded, no keyboard entries are needed, and your teacher chose to return scores instantly.

Clicking on the Check Answer button at the bottom right corner of the question will allow you to see how you scored on that question and and if you got it wrong you could give it another try.

Your teacher will restrict the amount of times you are allowed to use the Check Answer button, once you reach this limit, the button will be disabled and your most recent response will be locked-in, you will no longer be able to edit it. Threads & Themes will record the amount of attempts made and will display the number of attempts for your teacher to view. Please note that the ability to try again and check your answer again will only be available until you submit your assignment - once submitted the button will remain disabled.

Progress Bar

As you respond to questions on an assigned lesson, a progress bar will be displayed on the left side of your screen. The boxes on the progress bar represent different types of content within your assignment, as follows:

Communicating with your teacher

You have the ability to communicate with your teacher directly through your lesson assignment. If you want to explain your reasoning or ask your teacher for clarification about a question, just click the little conversation text icon on the right side corner below the question and type your message into the prompt. You can also click on the blue plus sign in the text box to include an image, audio recording, or other content besides just text! When you're ready, click the Send icon to send it directly to your teacher.

Your teacher can respond or leave feedback for you too! It will show up under the applicable question on the assignment. If you already navigated away from this question to another one on the same assignment, the feedback from your teacher will also pop-up on your screen as you are working.

You can send messages through Threads & Themes only to your teacher. Other students will not be able to read what you've written in the feedback section.

Any messages you receive from your teacher (or send them) while taking a lesson with multiple attempts on it, will carry over to all the following attempts. This will allow both you and your teacher to maintain a flow of communication throughout the whole process - from the moment the lesson is assigned to you until the you have finished taking all possible attempts.

Submitting assignments

Once you've finished answering all questions on your assignment, click Submit to turn it in. Your teacher will decide if you are able to see your assignment or check your scores after it has been submitted. If you submit before you finish answering, only your teacher can give you access to the assignment again.

**Note: If there are required questions in the assignment, you must answer all of them to be able to submit.

If your teacher added a Show Your Work box to a required question, not filling out the Show Your Work box will not prevent you from submitting your work, however you will be warned that your submission is incomplete. The same warning will also appear if you have not answered all non-required questions on the assignment.

Submission summary

After submitting your assignment, a summary report will appear, either at the bottom of the lesson, or on a separate page. From this summary report you will be able to navigate into individual responses to view both the responses you entered and any feedback your teacher provided you about them.

Depending on the settings selected by your teacher you may be able to see your current score and learn if there are any items on your assignment that are still awaiting grading by the teacher.

If your teacher enabled retakes (multiple attempts) on this lesson, you will also see your performance on previous attempts and have the ability to launch a retake from within this report.

Clicking Return to homepage will redirect you back to the Threads & Themes Your Assignments page.

Retakes

At times, your teacher may choose to allow multiple attempts (retakes) on the same lesson. If this is the case, the amount of available retakes will be visible to you on the Submission Summary page.

You can click the Retake button from within this Submission Summary page immediately after completing your former submission, or you can exit the lesson and come back to it later.

Once the lesson has bee submitted, it will no longer appear under your To do tab. Both assignments that had only one submission allowed and assignments that allow retakes will be displayed under the Submitted tab. You can click on Review lesson from the Submitted tab to re-access the lesson and and enable the retake from the submission summary inside it.

What happens when you do a retake?

Once you select to Retake a lesson the assignment will re-open, and:

  • Any question you previously answered correctly will have the formerly entered answer already filled out on display. While you have the option to change these answers if you choose to, there is no need to do so - the correct answers will be saved and you can skip to the next question.

  • Any question you previously answered incorrectly will appear unanswered at this time, and you will need to enter a new response for the system to grade.

  • Any question that requires manual scoring by the teacher such as question types that are not possible to automatically score (for example, a Video Response) will NOT be saved in between attempts UNLESS already scored by the teacher. If the teacher has not scored them yet, they will be treated in the same way as questions that were answered incorrectly and will appear unanswered upon the following attempt(s), meaning you will need to enter a new response. If the teacher manually scores these before you begin another attempt, the score and the previously entered response will be saved and display for you when retaking the formative.

Messaging with your teacher on retakes

Any feedback message you receive from your teacher (or send them) on an individual question while taking the lesson - on any of the attempts - will carry over to all the following attempts. This will allow both you and your teacher to maintain a flow of communication throughout the whole process - from the moment the lesson is assigned to you until the you have finished taking all possible attempts.

Troubleshooting common issues

Many common problems such as "Oops! Something went wrong!" errors are caused by your browser.

  • Ensure your browser is up to date. Threads & Themes works best with the latest version of Chrome or Safari.

  • Check your network connectivity. If you're accessing Threads & Themes on a phone, ensure you have enough bars or are connected to WiFi.

  • If you have pop-up blockers or ad-blockers installed, these may be preventing certain Threads & Themes features from working. Try removing them and other extensions if you run into issues loading parts of Threads & Themes.

  • You have to enable third-party cookies and allow website tracking in order to view embedded items like PDFs, videos, audio, or images. If embedded content isn't loading, it is probably cookie settings or a browser extension blocking it.
